Basking sharks are one of the largest fish in the world. They are filter feeders like the whale shark and the mega mouth sharks. Basking sharks are named for a weird thing that they do that no other shark does. They will lay very near to the surface of the water and bask in the sunlight! That's just cool! Sometimes people think that basking sharks must be related to whales (not whale sharks, just whales, like the blue whale) but they are not!
These sharks grow up to 32 feet long and can have 6 pups. Basking sharks are the only sharks that swims while feeding. Here is something weird, in the winter basking sharks disappear, like *poof* gone. Just not there anymore. And no where in the world has anyone seen a male basking shark, or a baby basking shark. That is just weird! Basking sharks are one of the mysteries on Earth.
Some people think that basking sharks dive very deep into the ocean at winter and that they breed and have babies during the winter time. The males stay in the deep ocean and never come up.
